Freshman Impact Program

Good Evening
The Freshman Impact program will be held at Spearfish High School on Monday, April 23 and is a required part of every freshman’s Advisory program. All freshmen will attend the program beginning at 8:15 am and will conclude at 3:15 pm. The one day program featuring hands on activities, demonstrations and speakers with real life experiences is an invaluable part of our preparing students to make healthy life long choices. SHS uses this program to assist us in preparing our youth with dealing with issues like peer pressure,
texting while driving, impaired driving, teen suicide awareness, bullying, underage drinking, and drug abuse. Feel free to stop by SHS and see the program 1st hand on April 23rd.

Junior Testing

Good evening. Testing for your junior student will take place the next 2 weeks. On Wednesday, April 18th and Thursday, April 19th juniors will take the DStep Science assessment and on Thursday, April 26th and Friday, April 27th your child will be taking the Smarter Balance assessment tests. Science testing will take place in scheduled Chemistry classes and will not affect the rest of the student’s day. The Smarter Balanced assessments will encompass the entire day. That assessment measures student achievement in relation to our state standards in the areas of English language arts and mathematics.

While student grades will not be impacted by their performance on either assessment, each serves as a way for the school to see how well we are helping students meet rigorous standards. Public universities in South Dakota have assisted in the development of these assessments, with the goal of recognizing student scores on the grade 11 assessments as evidence that students are ready for introductory college courses and can be exempted from non-credit remedial courses. Shortly after testing is complete, you will receive a score report.

Since we prepare all students through day to day instruction, there is no need to study in preparation for the assessments. We do, however ask that students try their best and get plenty of rest during the testing time. We also need students here on the test days. Please do not schedule appointments, etc. on the testing days and help us to assure that your son or daughter will be in attendance on all 4 testing dates. Thank you for supporting your child during testing time. We will do everything we can to make this time constructive and minimize the time out of class for the students.

ACT Tests

Good Evening Sophomore Parents

In our continued efforts to prepare all students for their future, SHS sophomores will take the Pre ACT test on Tuesday, Feb. 20 during blocks 2, 3 and 4. There will be no costs to take the assessment; associated fees will be paid by Spearfish High School. The assessment will measure skills in English, Reading, Math and Science. Each section will take about 40 minutes. Students will receive a score in each of the 4 areas along with a composite score. Results predict future success on the ACT test and provide both current achievement and projected future ACT test scores on the familiar 1-36 ACT score scale. ACT Interest Inventory results provide students with a personalized view of interests with college and career alignment and insights to help educators, parents and students make important decisions for the future. The results will also allow staff members to identify curriculum strengths and weaknesses. Results will be available approximately 2 weeks after testing. Please make sure your sophomore attends school on Tuesday, February 20, as there is no makeup test date.
